Bridgetown Careenage (Constitution River)
13° 5.8′ N · 59° 37.0′ W · approximate
Bridgetown's historic inner harbour, a narrow river basin in the heart of the UNESCO-listed old town where yachts berth stern-to beneath the Parliament Buildings, reached through the lifting Chamberlain Bridge.
Practical
Position is the Careenage from OpenStreetMap (approx). Yachting World (2016) reported about 50 stern-to berths in the inner basin, all with water and electricity. Get permission at the Marine Services Office (next to the Waterfront Café) before entering; Noonsite gives hours of 9 am to 3 pm on weekdays. Earlier cruiser reports and Yachting World (2016) say there is a minimum three-night stay, that the bridge needs five or six hours' notice to lift (call or email on Friday for a weekend move), and that the fee was about US$25 a night with water and power (2015; verify locally). A 2017 rally crew found the office kept irregular hours, but it could be asked to open by contacting Barbados port control on VHF 12 or 16, ideally with advance notice. Noise, road traffic, rubbish and rats are reported, so lock up and close hatches. A dinghy can use the Careenage free while you shop; Noonsite reported an attempted dinghy theft from the dinghy dock in December 2022, so cable-lock it. Fuel: none; use jerry cans.
