Barbados Hurricane Season

13° 6.0′ N · 59° 37.0′ W · approximate

Barbados lies east of the island chain and outside the main hurricane development region, so it is often spared, but not always: Hurricane Elsa passed just south as a hurricane in July 2021 and Beryl damaged more than 200 boats in July 2024.

Practical

Position is the Bridgetown area (approx). The Atlantic season runs June 1 to November 30. Wikipedia: on average a major hurricane strikes Barbados about once every 26 years; the last severe hit was Janet in 1955, and Tomas (2010) was only a tropical storm on impact. Beryl (July 2024) put the island under a hurricane warning, damaged more than 200 boats (local fundraising went to repairing the largely uninsured fishing fleet) and caused about US$96.5 million in damage. Elsa became a hurricane as its centre passed just south of Barbados on July 2, 2021. There is no hurricane hole: Carlisle Bay is open to the south and west, and haul-out space at the Shallow Draught is limited. Most cruisers leave for Grenada or Trinidad. Barbados Port Inc. publishes emergency and severe-weather guidance for boats. The wet season runs about June to December (Wikipedia).
