Laguna Grande Bioluminescent Bay

18° 22.6′ N · 65° 37.4′ W

A mangrove-ringed lagoon inside the Cabezas de San Juan reserve, one of Puerto Rico's three year-round bioluminescent waters, reached by kayaking at night through a winding mangrove channel from Las Croabas.

Practical

Position from OpenStreetMap (Laguna Grande). Wikipedia: one of three bodies of water in Puerto Rico with year-round bioluminescence (with Mosquito Bay on Vieques and La Parguera). Not a boat anchorage: visit on a guided night kayak tour that launches from Las Croabas (Wikivoyage lists operators; prices around US$45 in older listings: verify locally). Go near the new moon; moonlight drowns out the glow. Leave the yacht at a marina or at Isleta Marina and take a taxi.

Best for

An easy bio-bay night from a Fajardo marina

Season

Year-round; best around the new moon
