Hurricane Season (St Thomas)

18° 20.2′ N · 64° 55.6′ W · approximate

The Virgin Islands sit in the hurricane belt; storms are most likely in August, September and October. Hurricanes Hugo (1989), Marilyn (1995) and Irma and Maria (2017) all hit St. Thomas hard.

Practical

Position approximate: Charlotte Amalie harbor, as a reference point for the whole island. Coast Pilot: thirteen tropical systems passed within 50 miles of Charlotte Amalie since 1950, including Donna (1960) and Hugo (1989) with winds over 130 knots, Marilyn (1995) and Georges (1998); St. James Bay and St. Thomas Harbor are safe anchorages except in hurricanes; Krum Bay and Benner Bay are the traditional small-craft hurricane shelters. Many insurers require boats to be out of the area or hauled during the season; plan a haul-out at Independent Boat Yard well ahead.
