Hurricane Hole (Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument)

18° 20.6′ N · 64° 41.8′ W

Four mangrove-lined bays off Coral Bay's north arm, protected in the Coral Reef National Monument: a day-use snorkel and kayak spot with corals growing on the mangrove roots, and a permitted storm refuge in hurricane season.

Practical

Position is the GNIS point for Hurricane Hole. Coast Pilot 5: the north arm of Coral Bay, 0.6 mile wide at the entrance west of Turner Point; its small bays give protection from almost any direction for small vessels; a shoal with rocks awash extends 100 yards off the west side. Rules (Compendium 2026, NPS fishing page): anchoring is prohibited in the monument; all monument moorings are day-use only (there is a big-boat day-use mooring in Princess Bay); fishing and take of any kind is prohibited in the monument except permitted hard-nose fishing at the Cabritte Horn moorings and permitted bait fishing in Hurricane Hole. Storm refuge: a free Hurricane Hole storm-berth permit (renewed annually; a limited number of berths offered in June) allows a vessel up to 60 ft to secure to the submerged storm-chain system (up to 100 vessels) only when the superintendent opens the area before a storm; never tie to mangroves or other vegetation. Without a permit, do not plan on Hurricane Hole as your storm plan.

Best for

Mangrove snorkeling by day; permitted storm refuge in season

Season

Day use year-round; storm berths by NPS permit only (hurricane season Jun–Nov)
