Copper Mine National Park

18° 26.0′ N · 64° 25.5′ W

Roofless stone engine house and chimney of a 19th-century Cornish copper mine perched on the cliffs of Virgin Gorda's southeast tip, with surf crashing below and tropicbirds nesting in the rocks.

Practical

Copper Mine Point National Park (established 1998, 31.93 acres). Spaniards may have mined copper here in the early 16th century; Cornish miners built the surviving engine house, boiler, chimney, shafts and cistern in the early 19th century, and the mine closed in 1865. Ruins were stabilised from 1998 with help from Cornish experts. White-tailed tropicbirds nest in the cliff crevices near the southeast corner of the engine house. No landing from the sea on this exposed coast: visit by taxi or rental car from Spanish Town. Stay back from the cliff edges and open shafts.
