Cane Bay Wall

17° 46.3′ N · 64° 48.6′ W

The famous north-shore drop-off, rated among the Caribbean's top dives: from a buoy in 26 ft just 100 yards off the beach, sand chutes lead through coral gardens to a wall that falls from 40 ft to over 3,200 ft.

Practical

Coordinate from GoToStCroix's dive-site listing. Shore dive: enter from the sand in front of the boat ramp at Cane Bay Beach and swim out to the white mooring buoy in front of the Cane Bay Beach sign, then descend and follow the chutes to the drop. Also dived by boat. Surge and surface swell on the swim out; visibility 20 to 60 ft depending on season and runoff (GoToStCroix). Reef sharks, rays, turtles, nineteenth-century anchors; humpbacks may be heard March to April; a Nature Conservancy coral-restoration nursery sits in the bay. Cane Bay Dive Shop and Sweet Bottom Dive Center (across the road) rent gear and guide dives. The Cane Bay Dive Shop describes the wall as running from Salt River to Hams Bluff. Cane Bay is a DPNR mooring/anchoring area; public moorings are day-use, 3-hour, under 60 ft.
