Khao Lak Anchorage (Bang Niang)

8° 39.0′ N · 98° 14.4′ E

An open-roadstead anchorage off the Khao Lak resort beaches (Nang Thong to Bang Niang), handy for restaurants, dive shops, supermarkets and crew flying in through Phuket.

Practical

Southeast Asia Pilot position 08°39.041N, 98°14.375E (off Nang Thong beach, about 1 nm south of Bang Niang). Approach from the west, avoiding the rocks around the headland and the isolated rock outcrops just north of the anchorage. Anchor in 3–6 m on sand/mud. Good protection in the NE monsoon only; the pilot says anchoring anywhere on this coast is appropriate only in high season. Land the dinghy on the beach; surf can build on afternoon sea breezes. The OSM-mapped Bang Niang and Lah Own piers are small and tidal. Ashore: Bang Niang market, the Police Boat 813 memorial, clinics and supermarkets.

Best for

Provisioning and a night ashore in Khao Lak

Season

November to April; untenable in the SW monsoon
