Coëtivy Island Anchorage (West Side)

7° 8.7′ S · 56° 15.5′ E · approximate

A long, narrow 9 km coral island 160 nm south-southeast of Victoria. A large bay indenting its west shore gives the US sailing directions' 'excellent shelter' from the southeast trades.

Practical

Pub. 171 (2010): vessels can anchor anywhere off the W side; the most convenient position is off the settlement. Vessels passing S of the island should keep at least 6 nm off. No depth or bottom type is given, so sound in. Landing needs IDC permission. The island is an IDC farm and shrimp-aquaculture site (a prison operated here until 2019), and access has been strictly controlled. Coordinate is approximate: about 0.75 nm W of the settlement as located by OpenStreetMap.

Best for

SE-trade shelter on the way south (with IDC permission)

Season

SE trades (May-Oct); exposed in NW monsoon
