Bird Island

3° 43.2′ S · 55° 12.2′ E

The northernmost island of Seychelles, a 101-hectare coral cay with more than 5 km of white beaches, where about 700,000 pairs of sooty terns turn the northern end into a roaring colony each southeast season.

Practical

Privately owned since 1967 and run as a small eco-lodge with 7 self-catering villa compounds. The lodge says yacht-charter and fishing-charter visitors are welcome for a day visit or an overnight stay if they contact it first (reservations@birdislandseychelles.com, +248 422 4925). A 2011 fee list showed a landing fee of SCR 600 per person by prior request (verify locally). Charter yachts need special Seychelles Ports Authority authorisation (Moorings eGuide 2024 edition). No mobile network; payments by card accepted; the Island Store opens in the mornings. About 56 nm from Victoria (computed).

Best for

The great sooty-tern spectacle, the giant tortoise Esmeralda and empty beaches

Season

Terns about April-October; calmest sea and best snorkelling October-April
