Baie Lazare and Anse Gouvernement Anchorage

4° 45.5′ S · 55° 28.6′ E · approximate

The long half-moon bay where Lazare Picault landed in 1742, with the Anse Gouvernement cove and the Kempinski resort on its west side: turquoise, shallow water over sand and coral, good snorkelling along the granite and lunch at Maria's Rock Café.

Practical

Coordinate derived: off Anse Gouvernement beach (OSM beach way) in the western half of the bay, about 270 m from the shore and checked to be in water; no published soundings. Pub. 171 describes the SW coast bays as fronted by steep-to reefs with anchorage outside them for vessels with local knowledge, so approach in good overhead light, anchor on sand clear of the fringing coral and leave room to swing. Seyvillas: relatively shallow water, small waves at normal tide, coral reef, seaweed June-September; good for swimming, snorkelling and windsurfing. The bay opens west: settled-weather stop in the SE trades with likely shore break on the beaches (as cruisers report on Mahé's west-facing bays); untenable in the NW monsoon. Ashore: Baie Lazare petrol station, clinic, police and mini-markets up the hill; Windsong Beach Restaurant at the Kempinski (+248 4 386 666).

Best for

A settled-weather day stop with snorkelling and a beach lunch

Season
