Eastsound and Fishing Bay Anchorage (Orcas Island)

48° 41.4′ N · 122° 54.7′ W

Fishing Bay sits at the very head of East Sound, right off Eastsound village, the largest town on Orcas. Anchor here and row ashore for cafes, shops and the island's best groceries.

Practical

Coordinate is the OSM bay. Anchor in about 20 ft (6 m) a couple of hundred yards off the small county dock, landing just west of Madrona Point (2014 cruising report); there are no buoys and no marina. The public dock is small and fills on summer weekends, and has been out of the water in past seasons; check locally. Fishing Bay and Ship Bay are voluntary no-anchor zones for eelgrass (Northwest Straits Commission map): anchor outside the eelgrass in deeper water. East Sound funnels wind along its length, so it gets choppy when the breeze builds, especially in southerlies. The shore dries a long way at low tide. Coast Pilot: the Eastsound wharf has about 7.5 ft (2.3 m) at its end; magnetic disturbance of about 2 degrees has been reported at the head of the sound.
