San Jose Anchorage (Mangarin Bay)

12° 19.4′ N · 121° 5.4′ E

A big, shallow mud-bottomed bay off San Jose, the commercial hub of south-west Mindoro, sheltered by Mangarin Point and Ilin Island - flat calm in the NE monsoon and handy for the airport and Coron ferries.

Practical

Position: hackingfamily 12 19.42N 121 05.44E, 21 ft mud, Globe 4G / Smart 3G (March, NE monsoon - flat calm). Hazards (hackingfamily): three sand islands north of Mangarin Bay have larger reefs than they appear, plus underwater reefs - the south side of the bay is clearer. Inner bay NE of the town peninsula is charted at 2.7 m (likely soft mud) and may give SW-monsoon protection; shallows lie 300 m NE of the point, so round it closely. Wikipedia (1906 Sailing Directions): Mangarin Bay is shoal, sheltered by Mangarin Point and Ilin Island, 4-5 fathoms off the sand spit at the end of Mangarin Point, shoaling rapidly inshore. Sail The Philippines: 'little to shout about' but it has the domestic airport; Ilin and Ambulong are more tranquil than the port area. Town (Wikivoyage): Gaisano supermarket, Metrobank and PNB 24-hour ATMs; Cebu Pacific flights to Manila; ferries to Coron from Caminawit port.
