Northeast Monsoon (Amihan) in the Calamianes
11° 54.0′ N · 120° 9.0′ E · approximate
The amihan blows from the northeast through the dry season: the cruising season in the Calamianes, with lee anchorages on the south and west sides of the islands, but also days of strong winds that pin boats in Coron.
Practical
Coordinate approx: Coron Bay centre (Wikipedia/GeoHack), representing the whole group. Hackingfamily: amihan prevalent about December through April, November and May shoulder months with variable winds. Speedwell (December 2023) waited a few days in Coron for very strong NE winds to ease before heading south. Moken (February 2015) found Culion's east coast 'a little rough' with NE wind and swell and the Linapacan Strait reputed rough; a Mindoro-to-Busuanga crossing saw 30 kn easterlies. Hackingfamily had several days of 20+ kn at the Coron town anchorage. Dry, sunny season roughly November to May (Chris and Wren's World). Best NE-season anchorages: Bulalacao, Ditaytayan, Tara, Binundac, Busuanga Bay; avoid NE-facing coves.
