Chocolate Hills

9° 47.9′ N · 124° 10.0′ E

At least 1,260 and possibly more than 1,700 grassy limestone domes, mostly 30-50 m high and up to 120 m, rolling across more than 50 sq km of central Bohol. They turn chocolate-brown in the dry season. The main viewing deck is at the government-run Chocolate Hills Complex in Carmen.

Practical

Position: Chocolate Hills Complex, Carmen (OpenStreetMap). About 55 km from Tagbilaran (Wikipedia); a full-day countryside tour (Chocolate Hills, tarsiers, Loboc cruise, Baclayon, Blood Compact, Bilar man-made forest) runs about 7 hours and costs PHP 1,500-2,500 per person (philippinedives.com Balicasag guide, 2026), or hire a van for PHP 2,500-3,500 a day; entry fee PHP 50 (philippinedives.com Panglao guide, 2026). Declared a National Geological Monument in 1988 and protected since 1997. The 2013 earthquake destroyed the original viewing deck, which has since been rebuilt. The second main viewpoint is Sagbayan Peak, 18 km away. The grass turns brown in the dry season.
