Black Island Mooring (Nanshin Maru)

12° 9.3′ N · 119° 49.2′ E

A heavy wreck mooring 100 m off Black Island's beach, in 90 ft of water, the only practical way for a yacht to overnight at this remote karst island with its caves and the Nanshin Maru below.

Practical

Sloepmouche (2017): big black mooring on the Nanshin Maru wreck at 12 09.27N 119 49.19E, bottom about 90 ft (27 m), about 100 m from the beach; they checked it and found it sturdy enough overnight. No Globe, weak Smart. Brigadoon (2013): mooring buoy in 60 ft, close to land. Dinghy or swim ashore to a steep beach with small palapas. The Nanshin Maru (Japanese tanker, 40-50 m) lies with its stern top at 20 m facing shore and bow at 30 m: an easy wreck, best at slack tide. The caves are a few hundred metres from the beach (12 09.16N 119 49.09E), clean and well marked; bring torches. Expect a fee: about PHP 200 per person for wreck plus caves (2017) or PHP 150 for the caves (2013); verify locally. About 16 nm from Busuanga Bay. Exposed to the west and to the SW monsoon; settled weather only.
