Villa Blanca Wall (Cozumel)

20° 29.3′ N · 86° 58.3′ W · approximate

A sponge-covered wall and shallow reef just south of town off the Villablanca hotel - the closest wall dive to San Miguel, a favourite night dive and the site of an NGO coral-restoration nursery.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: placed about 300 m offshore of the Villablanca Garden Beach Hotel (Wikivoyage 20.488434, -86.967910); OpenStreetMap maps 'Reef Villa Blanca' just south at 20.48458, -86.97190. Not a published dive-site position - confirm with your operator. Typical depth 0-20 m (0-60 ft), visibility commonly 30 m+ (Underwater Photography Guide); octopus, queen and French angelfish, vase sponges, occasional eagle rays; good day or night. Experienced divers can do it from the beach (njscuba). Three dive shops sit next to the Villablanca hotel - Dive Paradise, Scuba Mau and Papa Hogs (Wikivoyage). The Cozumel Coral Reef Restoration Program runs a shore-entry snorkel tour of its nursery on the Villa Blanca reefs (to 6 m / 20 ft, 2 hours, meet at the Sand Dollar Sports lab, no sunscreen) and notes the Harbor Master may close the port to water activities when northerly winds exceed 15 knots in winter. The park boundary starts just south of the international cruise piers (Spanish Wikipedia) - check with your operator whether the park fee applies here. Lots of cruise-ship and dive-boat traffic: fly a dive flag.
