Santiago Bay Anchorage (La Boquita)
19° 6.5′ N · 104° 23.6′ W · approximate
A wide-open anchorage in the northwest corner of Bahía de Santiago off Playa La Boquita, a nearly four-mile beach of tuba bands, horseback riders and kite-flyers — with a sunken freighter to snorkel at one end and spectacular sunrises over the bay.
Practical
Position approximate: placed about 400 m off the west end of Playa La Boquita, east of the San Luciano wreck, from OpenStreetMap; no published waypoint was found. Open roadstead: calm on many nights (a 2020 crew spent five calm nights), but often rolly when wind and swell cross, and stern anchors can be strained by overnight crosswinds. Strong current can sweep swimmers away from the boat. Dinghy landing through sets of surf onto a designated dinghy parking area on the beach with a rope to tie to; watch for the rising tide. The Oasis beach bar is the cruiser hangout. Soot from the coal-fired power plant at the south end of Manzanillo Bay has greyed decks (2013; the plant was being converted to natural gas). Santiago town (market, tianguis, shops) is a short bus or taxi ride.
Best for
Beach life and a wreck snorkel, with Manzanillo's shops close by
Season
