Punta Tunich (Cozumel)
20° 24.9′ N · 87° 1.1′ W · approximate
A sloping wall off Punta Tunich famous for some of the fastest current on Cozumel - huge sea fans, whips and sponges, groupers on the reef top and schooling snapper in the blue.
Practical
Coordinate is approximate: placed about 400 m offshore of the Casa Tunich locality mapped in OpenStreetMap (20.41556, -87.01389); not a published dive-site position. Depth to about 40 m / 130 ft - PADI suggests deep or tec-rec certification to see it all; divers' logs give a typical max of 22-24 m. The wall starts on flat sand and drops away; the current is strong and can be turbulent, so watch your gauge (njscuba calls Tunich famous for current). The north end is the most interesting and is best dived when the current runs south to north (SSI logbook). Advanced divers. Cozumel's channel current runs northbound at an average 1-2 knots (Spanish Wikipedia), so this is a drift dive: the boat drops you up-current and follows your bubbles - carry an SMB and stay with your guide. Inside Cozumel Reefs National Park: dive only with a licensed operator; the park fee was 255 pesos per person in April 2026 and is sometimes charged on top of the dive price (Riviera Maya News). No touching, standing on or taking any marine life, no stepping on seagrass, and only biodegradable sunscreen (Riviera Maya News). Fly a dive flag - boat traffic is heavy (njscuba). Sections of the park have been rotated closed since 2019 for coral-disease recovery, so confirm the site is open.
