Tormentos Reef (Cozumel)
20° 25.8′ N · 87° 0.6′ W · approximate
A sculpted strip of coral heads and overhangs on white sand off Punta Tormentos - shallow, photogenic and packed with life, and one of Cozumel's classic second dives.
Practical
Coordinate is approximate: placed offshore between Chankanaab and Punta Tunich, following the north-to-south site order given by Spanish Wikipedia (Paraíso, Las Palmas, Chankanaab, Tormentos, Yucab, Punta Tunich, San Francisco, Santa Rosa, Paso del Cedral, La Francesa, Punta Dalila, Palancar, Colombia, Punta Sur, Maracaibo); not a published position. Depth 12-20 m (40-65 ft), beginner-friendly, current manageable when present (SSI); others call the current often strong - it varies by day (Bluewater, njscuba). Overhangs, a sandy 'moonwalk', cleaning stations, nurse sharks, turtles, occasional eagle rays; seahorses in the grass behind the dunes (njscuba). Cozumel's channel current runs northbound at an average 1-2 knots (Spanish Wikipedia), so this is a drift dive: the boat drops you up-current and follows your bubbles - carry an SMB and stay with your guide. Inside Cozumel Reefs National Park: dive only with a licensed operator; the park fee was 255 pesos per person in April 2026 and is sometimes charged on top of the dive price (Riviera Maya News). No touching, standing on or taking any marine life, no stepping on seagrass, and only biodegradable sunscreen (Riviera Maya News). Fly a dive flag - boat traffic is heavy (njscuba). Sections of the park have been rotated closed since 2019 for coral-disease recovery, so confirm the site is open.
