Puerto Escondido (Oaxaca) Anchorage

15° 51.4′ N · 97° 3.8′ W · approximate

The town bay of Puerto Escondido, a surf and backpacker town where the fishing fleet moors close off Playa Principal below cliffs and a lighthouse; a possible open-roadstead stop on the long run between Acapulco and Huatulco.

Practical

Approximate: placed in the bay south of the OSM outline of Playa Principal (15.8601, -97.0632). Wikipedia: fishing boats and water taxis moor close to shore off Playa Principal, with low to moderate surf; the bay is backed by 15-30 m cliffs. No recent cruiser anchoring report was found for this edition: depths, holding and swell are unverified, so treat it as a calm-weather daytime stop and sound carefully. S/V Some Tuesday sailed past without stopping in Feb 2026. No fuel dock or marina. Do not confuse it with Puerto Escondido, Baja California Sur. S/V Cool Runnins (Aug 2010) found the bay cramped with fishing boats and an underwater canyon that made anchoring impossible, circled for two hours and moved on to Puerto Ángel: have a backup plan. Land the dinghy at Playa Principal (see 'Playa Principal Dinghy Landing (Puerto Escondido)').

Best for

A calm-weather break between Acapulco and Huatulco

Season
