Playa del Amor (Hidden Beach, Islas Marietas)

20° 42.2′ N · 105° 34.0′ W

A sand beach at the bottom of a collapsed sea cave open to the sky, reached only by swimming through a short tunnel from the open sea. It became an internet sensation and was overrun, so it now opens to a few small, timed groups a day.

Practical

Coordinate is the OSM attraction node 'Playa del amor' on Isla Redonda. Closed May 9, 2016 after visitor numbers hit about 2,500 a day; reopened with strict limits. In 2016 CONANP set 116 visitors a day, no more than 15 at a time, 30 minutes per visit, no fins, masks or snorkels and no diving, and visitors wear PFDs and a permit bracelet (Latitude 38, September 2016 and January 2016). Entry is with permitted tour operators only; private yachts should not attempt it independently. Accessible only around low tide when the tunnel has airspace. Verify current CONANP rules and operators locally.
