Hurricane Season (Guerrero and Oaxaca)
16° 30.0′ N · 98° 30.0′ W · approximate
The eastern Pacific hurricane season runs May 15-November 30, peaking in late August; this coast has been hit hard: Pauline and Rick in 1997, Carlotta in 2012 and the Category 5 Otis at Acapulco in 2023.
Practical
Approximate: an offshore reference point for the Guerrero-Oaxaca coast. Most storms form between late June and early October (NHC). Mainland anchorages here are open roadsteads with no true hurricane holes; Otis showed how fast storms can intensify. Roads Less Traveled described Marina Chiapas as below the hurricane belt; it offered summer storage rates (US$200/month for May-Nov in 2012-2014; verify locally). Most cruisers leave the coast by May, heading north to the Sea of Cortez or south past the Gulf of Tehuantepec to Central America.
