Barra de Potosí Anchorage (Punta Potosí)

17° 32.4′ N · 101° 27.1′ W · approximate

An open roadstead off the fishing village of Barra de Potosí, about 8 nm southeast of Zihuatanejo, tucked inside Punta El Potosí at the south end of the long Playa Larga/Playa Blanca beach. A day stop for the lagoon, the beach enramadas and the Morros de Potosí dive.

Practical

Approximate: placed about 400 m north of the north shore of the Punta El Potosí headland (OSM node 8947734494 at 17.5268, -101.4564; Petatlán coastline way 376222587) and about 1.2 km off the beach, so in open water; no cruiser anchoring report with depths or holding was found for this edition, so sound in and treat it as a calm-weather daytime stop. Surf Atlas: Punta Potosí 'offers a welcome break from the S swells' and makes the big summer groundswells wrap in smaller, but the beach takes spring and autumn W swells head-on and has a surf break, so expect surge and dumping waves on the sand. Land the dinghy only in small surf, ideally near the lagoon mouth by the village (17.536, -101.443) where pangas come ashore; otherwise leave the boat in Zihuatanejo Bay and come by taxi, as most day visitors do (Wikipedia). No fuel, marina or port captain here: Zihuatanejo is the port of entry.
