Barra de Navidad Lagoon Anchorage
19° 11.4′ N · 104° 40.4′ W
A large, almost fully enclosed lagoon behind Barra de Navidad where boats sit flat for weeks or months, with water taxis to town, palapa restaurants on the shore, a morning cruisers' net and a French baker who delivers croissants by panga. The most protected anchorage on the Costalegre.
Practical
Position from the OpenStreetMap seamark for the lagoon anchorage. Entered through the narrow, shallow channel past the marina (see Barra de Navidad Entrance Channel). Noonsite (2019): 6-12 ft in mud; in peak season the lagoon holds 50-60 boats. Soft mud holding: boats drag regularly, especially in wind reversals; neighbors used about 100 ft of chain in under 10 ft of water. Shoals and sandbars throughout — a 6 ft 6 in draft found 6 ft 8 in at the lowest tide of the month (2011), and one cruiser who has visited since 2016 calls it too shallow for her boat (2025). Creep in watching the sounder. Leave the ignition key in when you go ashore so neighbors can move your boat in an emergency. Lift and lock dinghies and outboards (thefts reported). The water is silty: no watermaker use, and no holding-tank discharge inside the lagoon. Drinking water by garrafón delivery (arrange through the water taxi desk). Morning net on VHF 22 at 9:00 am.
