Zeelandia Beach
17° 30.4′ N · 62° 58.9′ W
A long black-sand beach on Statia's wild Atlantic coast - superb for a walk and an important nesting beach for endangered sea turtles, but not for swimming.
Practical
Coordinates from OpenStreetMap. Wikivoyage warns waves and currents are so strong it is not safe to swim. Reached by Zeelandia Beach Road past the airport; take a taxi from Oranjestad. During turtle-nesting season avoid lights and stay off nests (STENAPA/Wikipedia). No facilities. Not an anchorage: this is the exposed Atlantic side, and Noonsite (June 2025) says all visiting yachts must anchor in the designated Oranje Baai zone - come by taxi. The sandy cliffs at the north end of the beach mark the start of the Boven tropicbird nesting area (KBA factsheet); the Caribbean Birding Trail recommends Zeelandia for close views of red-billed tropicbirds (nesting Oct-Jun).
