Sandy Island Reef

18° 12.8′ N · 63° 7.2′ W · approximate

The shallow horseshoe-shaped coral plateau around Sandy Island: soft corals, sea fans, reef fish and the odd ray in clear water within an easy swim of the beach.

Practical

Coordinate approx: on the plateau just NW of the islet. Snorkel from the beach or from your dinghy, and stay off the coral in surge. The deeper edges are dive sites, which by law must be dived with a local operator: Sandy Deep (south edge, 15-60 ft), Sandy Shallow (to 70 ft, more stingrays) and 'No Name' (20-65 ft, soft coral). Marine park: no fishing, no taking anything.
