Saint-Louis Anchorage (Marie-Galante)

15° 57.4′ N · 61° 19.3′ W

The main yacht anchorage of Marie-Galante, off the sleepy fishing town of Saint-Louis on the west coast - a long sandy bay with beach restaurants, a ferry pier and the best shelter on the island when a late-afternoon swell builds.

Practical

Position is Noonsite's St Louis anchorage waypoint (15°57.38'N 61°19.34'W). Anchor off the town clear of the ferry approach to the pier; a charter guide reports many moorings and calls it the most sheltered spot on the island if swell builds in the late afternoon (no fee details found - verify locally). A cruising couple found it well sheltered and very quiet, especially on Sundays. No water hose at the anchorage any more (2019). Clearance: the Saint-Louis boutique terminal (Chez Zeles) was reported unavailable in March 2023 - clear at Grand-Bourg customs (bus about 15-20 minutes, EUR 2.50 each way, roughly two an hour). Security: an unlocked dinghy and outboard were stolen at night (Dec 2017); a dinghy fuel tank was taken at the St Louis dinghy dock (Dec 2019); an attempted bag-snatch at the ferry dock (March 2021) - lock everything. The Père Labat distillery is about 3.5 km south.
