Indian River Tour

15° 34.3′ N · 61° 27.4′ W · approximate

Dominica's signature excursion: a guide rows you in silence up the island's widest river under a cathedral of buttressed bloodwood (swamp) trees, past herons, iguanas and crabs, to the Bush Bar in the forest - and past the witch's hut set from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

Practical

Position approximate - the river mouth between Portsmouth and Glanvillia (Wikipedia), placed from OpenStreetMap. Book through PAYS (tours by certified member guides; PAYS lists the river trip at about 2 hours) - go early morning for birds and glassy water. Discover Dominica describes these as rowboat tours led by local boatmen, so the river stays near-silent. Eco-site pass required for non-residents: US$8 single site, US$20 day, US$50 week (Forestry Division, effective Dec 2025), plus the guide's boat fee; a 2018 cruiser paid about US$5 at the gas station near the river dock. Older guide prices (US$25 pp, 2018) - verify locally. Bring cash for the Bush Bar. Forestry: avoid the river in heavy rain; wear a life jacket.
