Humpback Whale Season (Guadeloupe)

16° 29.0′ N · 61° 30.1′ W

Humpback whales come to the warm waters of the French Antilles to mate and calve from December; their songs can be heard underwater at the Pigeon islets in January and February. All of Guadeloupe's waters lie inside the Agoa marine-mammal sanctuary, created in 2010.

Practical

Position: the 'Mon Ecole Ma Baleine' humpback information point at Anse-Bertrand on Grande-Terre's north coast (OSM node 13884422741). Rules (Agoa sanctuary): approaching marine mammals closer than 300 m is prohibited for people, boats, swimmers, divers and drones; exemptions down to 100 m only for authorised professional operators; broadcasting whale positions on VHF in real time is prohibited; pursuit or harassment is banned under French national law. Slow down and keep a lookout on night passages in season. Choose a trained, authorised whale-watching operator if you want a closer look.
