Fort Amsterdam
18° 0.9′ N · 63° 3.6′ W
Ruins of the Dutch fort built in 1631 on the peninsula between Great Bay and Little Bay - rusting 19th-century cannons and a sweeping harbour view, and the place Peter Stuyvesant lost his leg in a failed 1644 attack.
Practical
Small and in poor repair but signed with interpretive maps. The surrounding 278 ha is an Important Bird Area with a brown pelican colony on the slope below the fort. Fort Amsterdam is also a 10 m / 30 ft reef-and-wreck dive site (outside the MPA). Opening hours not published - access is via the Little Bay side.
