Pohoiki Boat Ramp (Isaac Hale Beach Park)
19° 27.3′ N · 154° 50.4′ W
Puna's only boat launch, in a small bight 4 miles southwest of Kumukahi, protected by a lighted breakwater - largely buried by a new black-sand beach when the 2018 flow stopped a few hundred feet short.
Practical
Position is Pohoiki Bay Breakwater Light 2 (Fl R 4s) from the USCG Light List; the park is at 19.45769, -154.84187 (to-hawaii). STATUS: Wikipedia says the pier, launch and sheltered bay were mostly buried under black sand after 2018 and restoring boat access was still under discussion; to-hawaii says the ramp area has gone through post-eruption restoration work. Confirm with DLNR DOBOR whether the ramp is usable before planning on it. Powerful currents and big waves in the bay; poor swimming. Warm geothermal ponds sit behind the new beach. Not a refuge for a cruising yacht.
