The old Kona runway, closed in 1970, is now a mile-long shoreline park with free parking along the former airstrip, tide-pool inlets, and the Old Kona Airport Marine Life Conservation District offshore.
Practical
Coordinate from To-Hawaii.com's pin; address 75-5500 Kuakini Highway, just north of downtown Kailua. The best water entry is the inlet at the south end by the old terminal pavilion. Exposed to high surf; snorkel only when calm. The MLCD has a mapped No Boating Zone inshore and a Boating Permitted zone outside it (state MLCD layer); do not bring a dinghy or tender into the no-boating zone.
Best for
Calm-day snorkel and sunset walk near Kailua
