Niihau Hawaiian Monk Seals
22° 0.4′ N · 160° 5.6′ W
Niihau's empty beaches are a stronghold of the endangered Hawaiian monk seal; at Puukole Point there are usually a couple napping on the sand, and seals sometimes swim out to visit anchored boats.
Practical
Noodle's Notes: monk seals almost always on the beach at Puukole Point and visiting boats off Keawanui; Wikipedia: found in high numbers on Niihau's shores. NOAA: stay at least 50 ft from resting seals, never chase or push one into the water; mothers and pups need extra room; report injured or entangled seals to the NOAA Marine Wildlife Hotline (888) 256-9840. Coordinate: USGS GNIS 'Puukole'.
