Kii Landing Anchorage (Niihau East)
21° 58.1′ N · 160° 3.4′ W · approximate
A small bight on Niihau's northeast corner facing Kauai, the island's windward landing, only slightly protected from the trades.
Practical
Coast Pilot: Kii is about 0.7 mile west of Kaunuopou (the easternmost point of north Niihau); the landing is usable in ordinary weather but not in south weather; it is built on beach boulders with only 2-3 ft alongside; anchorage in about 8 fathoms, coral, about 0.6 mile off the landing. Kaunuopou Rocks, which break, lie 300 yards off the point, and another rock 0.4 mile off the south side of the point usually breaks - give it a good berth approaching Kii. About 1.3 miles south of Kii a reef with about 1 fathom over it, usually breaking, extends 0.5 mile offshore. Coordinate approximated 0.6 mile offshore of the GNIS position for Kii; verify on chart. Prefer the leeward anchorages unless the wind is west. Access: Niihau is privately owned and residents may tell you to leave; the beaches up to the vegetation line and the surrounding waters are public (Pacific Cup cruising notes; Noodle's Notes). Stay below the vegetation line, do not go inland, and if residents appear, the guide's author recommends simply returning to the boat.
