Practical

Noodle's Notes: 21-56.04N 160-10.00W (approximate), 8-15 ft over sand. Close to the settlement, so your presence will be noticed quickly. Coast Pilot: Kaununui Point is marked by a group of low rocks close inshore; a coral reef with 6.25 fathoms over it lies 1.5 miles off the point and is reported to break in heavy weather; the passage inside the reef is not recommended except for small boats. Noodle's Notes recommends departing Niihau for the Big Island on a close reach, well away from the channel throats. Access: Niihau is privately owned and residents may tell you to leave; the beaches up to the vegetation line and the surrounding waters are public (Pacific Cup cruising notes; Noodle's Notes). Stay below the vegetation line, do not go inland, and if residents appear, the guide's author recommends simply returning to the boat.
