Mokuleia and Dillingham North Shore Coast
21° 34.9′ N · 158° 11.5′ W
West of Haleiwa the road runs out along a wild, sparsely settled shore past Dillingham Airfield (gliders and skydiving) toward Kaena Point, with a shallow reef, kite and windsurf wind and long empty beaches.
Practical
Position is Mokuleia Beach Park (OpenStreetMap), the only beach park with facilities (restrooms, showers, picnic tables, parking) between Waialua and Kaena Point; no lifeguards; permit camping. Strong winter swells and rip currents; snorkel the reef only on calm, low-surf days. Turtles and monk seals: view from a distance. Dillingham (Kawaihapai) Airfield is at 21.5794,-158.1970; Pacific Skydiving operates on Farrington Highway nearby. Offshore, the Coast Pilot says keep at least 1 mile out along the reef-fringed north coast; a firing-area danger zone covers a wide sector north of Kaena Point (33 CFR 334.1350).
Best for
Remote beach walks, kiting and the road to Kaena Point
Season
Summer for the water; winter for surf-watching
