Magic Island Lagoon (Aina Moana)
21° 17.0′ N · 157° 50.8′ W · approximate
A man-made peninsula at the Diamond Head end of Ala Moana Beach Park, built in 1962 on reclaimed reef, enclosing a calm, seawall-protected swimming lagoon. It sits right at the Ala Wai harbor entrance, so you watch boats come and go from the sand.
Practical
Approx position: centroid of the Magic Island Lagoon water polygon in OpenStreetMap (relation 6032686). Officially Aina Moana; built in 1962 by reclaiming about 30 acres of shallow reef (Wikipedia). The lagoon is the calmest water in the park and the best choice for children and beginner swimmers. Rainbow Reef and the Magic Island day-use moorings are just offshore (see separate entry). After Hurricane Lowell, Magic Island and its parking lot reopened September 9, 2026 and the lagoon was scheduled to reopen September 11, 2026 (City and County of Honolulu). Park hours as for Ala Moana Beach Park (closed 10 pm to 4 am).
