Ala Moana Beach Park

21° 17.3′ N · 157° 50.9′ W

Honolulu's 100-acre city beach park right next door to the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor: a long reef-protected strip of sand, banyans and lawns where locals swim laps, picnic and watch the sunset. It is the closest real beach to a berth in the Ala Wai.

Practical

Coordinates from Wikipedia. Lifeguards on duty daily; showers, restrooms, picnic tables, food concessions, tennis courts and the McCoy Pavilion (Wikipedia). The east end (toward Magic Island) has a sandy bottom; the middle and west sections are rocky near shore and the bottom drops off quickly, so weak swimmers should stay at the east end (Wikipedia). Park closed 10 pm to 4 am, enforced by police (Wikipedia). Walking distance from the Ala Wai harbor and across Ala Moana Blvd from Ala Moana Center (Foodland Farms). Hurricane Lowell (September 2026) left sand and debris across the park; the city reopened Magic Island on September 9, 2026 with the rest of the park to follow later that week, so check city park notices if storm cleanup is still underway.

Best for

Swimming, sunset picnics and a shore break from boat life steps from the Ala Wai

Season

Year-round; summer south swells make the reef edge choppy
