19° 40.7′ N · 156° 1.3′ W

The national park beside Honokohau Harbor has a walkable network: the Ala Mauka Makai trail from the visitor center past ranch walls, loulu palms and a petroglyph side trail to Honokohau Beach, and a coastal section of the Ala Kahakai trail along the sand to 'Aimakapa and Kaloko fishponds.

Practical

Coordinate is the Ala Mauka Makai trailhead map board by the Hale Ho'okipa visitor center (OpenStreetMap). NPS park brochure: Ala Mauka Makai is rough and uneven, 0.9 mile each way; the coastal trail is soft sand and rough lava, 1.4 miles from 'Ai'opio Fishtrap to Kaloko Fishpond and 1.7 miles to Wawahiwa'a Point (the trail continues beyond the park). From the boat, walk out of the north side of Honokohau Harbor to 'Ai'opio and pick up the coastal trail. Visitor center 8:30am to 4pm. There is no water in the park; little shade; wear sturdy shoes.
