Kalaupapa Landing Anchorage

21° 11.4′ N · 156° 59.3′ W · approximate

An open roadstead off the Kalaupapa landing on the west side of the peninsula, used by the supply barge; a dramatic but windy spot beneath the cliffs.

Practical

Coast Pilot 10: anchorage in about 12 fathoms 0.2 mile off the landing; deep water close to the peninsula except the marginal reef just north of Kalaupapa; a steeple is prominent on the approach from the west. Coordinate is approx, placed 0.2 mile west of the landing. Sea Seek (2015) calls it reputedly vile and says the wind blew harder in the anchorage than out at sea, though it makes a stop between Honolua Bay and Oahu. Landing requires a DOH permit (see Kalaupapa Access Permit).

Best for

An emergency or settled-weather pause on the North Shore

Season

Summer only; exposed to north swell
