Kalaupapa Access Permit
21° 11.4′ N · 156° 59.1′ W
Entry to Kalaupapa, by air, trail or sea, requires a Hawaii Department of Health permit, issued only to members of an approved tour or on official business.
Practical
NPS (updated July 2026): Hawaii law requires a DOH permit before entering; tour participants receive it, and it allows entry by air or by the Pali Trail. Persons under 16 are not permitted. The DOH permit does not grant permission to cross the private land between Kalae Highway and the Pali trailhead. Coast Pilot 10: a special permit is required to land at Kalaupapa unless on state business; the state landing (coordinate here) has 56 ft of berthing with 2 to 4 ft alongside, behind a small north breakwater, used by the twice-yearly supply barge. Private yachts should assume they may not land. NPS tours were paused after July 2026; call (808) 567-6802.
