Kalapaki Bay Anchorage (Nawiliwili)

21° 57.3′ N · 159° 21.6′ W · approximate

Nawiliwili's inner bay off Kalapaki Beach looks like the obvious anchorage below Lihue, but the beach side is a no-mooring recreation zone; small boats instead use the special anchorage by the small-boat harbor and the mouth of Huleia Stream.

Practical

HAR 13-256-52 Zone A (from Kukii Point across the bay to the jetty and along the Kalapaki shoreline): no mooring and no speed above slow-no-wake. Coast Pilot: anchoring outside the breakwater is not recommended; commercial vessels may not anchor in the harbor basin without harbormaster permission; swinging room is limited; an anchorage area for small boats is within the mouth of Huleia Stream next to the small-boat basin, and a federal special anchorage lies north of the small-boat harbor (33 CFR 110.129a: bounded by 21-57-12.5N 159-21-38W, 21-57-26N 159-21-39.5W and the shoreline). Coordinate is the midpoint of that special-anchorage boundary line (approx); set an anchor alarm and expect surge in southeasterlies. A safety zone lies north of the small-boat harbor and a security zone is enforced when the fuel barge is in port (generally Friday to Saturday). Harbor speed limit 5 mph. Dinghy to the small-boat harbor; Kalapaki Beach, Duke's and the Lihue shops are a walk away.
