Snorkel· Lanai· Hawaii

Hulopoe Bay Marine Life Conservation District

20° 44.2′ N · 156° 53.7′ W

Lanai's marine reserve: a clear, sandy bay with reef ledges on both points, turtles, reef fish and, many mornings, a resident pod of spinner dolphins resting in the bay.

Practical

Part of the Manele-Hulopoe MLCD. Coast Pilot 10: state regulations forbid operating, mooring or anchoring any power-driven vessel within Hulopoe Bay (this includes a yacht under engine and an outboard dinghy); land from Manele harbor and walk over (about 10 minutes). Do not take anything, touch coral or disturb marine life (to-hawaii.com). Best snorkeling is along the left (east) point toward the tide pools and on the west reef. Best in summer; winter can bring surf and currents. The bottom drops off quickly; small rips can form. Federal rule: stay at least 50 yards from spinner dolphins (no swimming with, approaching or remaining within 50 yards) and 100 yards from humpback whales (NOAA).
