Hoapili Trail (King's Highway)

20° 35.6′ N · 156° 24.8′ W · approximate

The stone-paved road built under Governor Hoapili in the 1820s-1840s still runs across the black lava beyond La Perouse Bay toward Kanaio, a hot, shadeless walk through ancient village sites to pocket beaches and the Hanamanioa lighthouse.

Practical

Approx: trailhead area at the east side of La Perouse Bay, south of the Keoneoio parking lot (OpenStreetMap). About 5.5 miles round trip per the state trail listing (rated difficult, allow up to 6 hours); Moon rates the 5.5-mile round trip at about 4 hours. Follow the unmarked coastal path less than 1 mile south from the La Perouse lot to the official trailhead; a sign gives Kanaio Beach as 2 miles ahead, with a short spur to Keawanaku Beach. Sharp aa lava: wear boots. Little or no shade and no water: start at dawn and carry plenty. Mostly outside cell range. Stay on the trail; cultural sites are protected.
