Carlsmith Beach Park (Four Mile)

19° 44.0′ N · 155° 1.6′ W

Reef-protected lagoons with a sandy bottom - one of Hilo's better swimming and snorkeling spots, with sea turtles that swim close to snorkelers and cool spring water bubbling up.

Practical

Coordinate from to-hawaii's map. No sandy beach; enter from the grassy park. Name note: to-hawaii calls neighboring James Kealoha Beach Park (19.73493, -155.03251) the true '4 Miles' (4 miles from the Hilo post office) and notes it too is sometimes called Carlsmith Park. At Kealoha, a strong rip runs seaward from the central and western bay in high surf; the eastern end is sheltered and has a ponded swimming area.
