Anini Beach and Reef

22° 13.4′ N · 159° 27.6′ W

A long, reef-sheltered beach between Princeville and Kilauea where a fringing reef up to 0.2 mile wide shelters a shallow lagoon for snorkeling and paddling in calm conditions.

Practical

Coast Pilot: the reef west of Kalihiwai Bay is 0.2 mile wide, bare at low water, and fringes the shore for 2.5 miles; vessels should stay at least 0.8 mile offshore. Seasport Divers: shallow snorkeling inside a barrier reef extending about 150 yards, juvenile fish, not much coral inside the reef. Rules (HAR 13-256-38): Anini ocean waters are limited to commercial sailboard instruction (max 16 boards); motorized vessels slow-no-wake within 200 ft of shore and 100 ft from people fishing; two marked swimming zones next to the ramp and the park are closed to boats. Calm in summer; the outer reef and channel are dangerous in winter surf.
