22° 12.2′ N · 159° 28.4′ W
A steep ridge climb from Hanalei Valley with picture-postcard views over the taro fields, the river and the whole of Hanalei Bay - the best way to see your anchorage from above.
Practical
Na Ala Hele: 2.3 miles, moderate, about 1,232 ft of climb; access from a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service parking area off Ohiki Road in Hanalei Valley (just past the Hanalei bridge); follows a prohibition-era route used by moonshiners distilling okolehao from ki (ti) roots, into the Halelea Forest Reserve to the hill Kaukaopua. The lower section is maintained by Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge, upper sections by the Sierra Club Kauai Chapter. Listed open in October 2026. Muddy and slick after rain. From the anchorage it is a dinghy ride up the river plus about a 1-mile walk. Coordinate is the Na Ala Hele trailhead position.
