Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail
19° 55.3′ N · 155° 53.4′ W
A 175-mile network of ancient shoreline footpaths from Upolu Point down the Kohala and Kona coasts and around to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, designated a National Historic Trail in 2000. Short segments link many of the anchorages in this guide, such as Mahai'ula to Kua Bay (4.5 miles) and the A-Bay resort shoreline.
Practical
Coordinate is To-Hawaii.com's pin for the featured segment off Waikoloa Beach Drive near Anaeho'omalu Bay. The trail is not continuous; access points, parking and open sections vary, so pick a segment. Expect strong sun, rough lava and coral rubble, and little shade; walk in the morning or late afternoon and wear shoes, not slippers. The Kekaha Kai segment between Mahai'ula and Kua Bay is 4.5 miles (Wikipedia).
