Anchorage· Ithaca· Greece — Ionian, Saronic & Argolic

Vathi Harbour (Ithaca)

38° 21.9′ N · 20° 42.9′ E

Ithaca's capital sits at the head of a deep, almost landlocked bay — one of the largest natural harbours in the Ionian — rebuilt in Venetian style after the 1953 earthquake, with quays on three sides and an island chapel at the entrance.

Practical

Position from a Noonsite cruiser report (2014). Sheltered, but NW winds bring violent gusts down the hills. Best quay: opposite the village in the NNE corner — good protection from NW but a noisy road; often no power or water. The esplanade south of the ferry jetty has service pillars, sometimes shut down; power cards cost €30 (non-refundable, valid only in Argostoli and Vathi). Mooring fee €1.5 per metre LOA, collected late afternoon (SailingIssues, c. 2024 — verify locally). Berths further from the ferry dock are calmer. Holding good in mud and weed. Outside the village mole is a lee shore, though wind often dies overnight. Best anchorage is west of Lazaretto islet. In strong NW consider Kioni or Frikes instead. Showers at a small hotel. Quay fills by late evening in July (Noonsite 2014); a space is signed for yachts over 50 ft. Small archaeological museum (free) and Folklore & Nautical Museum in town.
